Marion County is marking America’s 250th birthday with a full-year celebration—built by local volunteers, powered by community partners, and designed to get you out exploring.

At 12:00 p.m. on Monday, January 12, local and state officials, committee members, and community partners gathered on the north-facing steps of Heritage Hall (169 E. Church St.) for a ceremonial America 250 Marion ribbon cutting and commemorative photo, followed by proclamations, remarks from the co-chairs, and refreshments inside the lower-level auditorium.

That ribbon cutting matters because it wasn’t announcing one big festival. It was the launch point for a year-long, county-wide celebration tied to America’s semiquincentennial—the 250th anniversary of the United States in 2026—with Marion’s own story at the center.

In other words: Marion County is officially joining the national lead-up to America’s 250th birthday, and the local version isn’t a one-day party. America 250 Marion is built to spotlight Marion’s unique chapter in the American story while giving residents and visitors plenty of reasons to get out and explore.

If you’ve heard “America 250” and assumed it’s basically fireworks with a fancy logo, here’s the real deal: the United States marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 2026.

Communities across the country are planning local ways to commemorate it. Marion’s plan is one of the more hands-on versions—less “sit and watch,” more “go and do.”

What is America 250 Marion?

America 250 Marion is a local initiative co-led by the Marion Community Foundation and the Marion Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, powered by community volunteers serving on Steering, Storytelling, and Marketing committees. The mission is straightforward: celebrate Marion’s history, honor the contributions of residents across the county, and build civic pride looking forward to the next 250 years.

The four-part plan (how this actually works)The local celebration is organized around four pillars designed to keep things moving all year instead of peaking once and disappearing:

  1. Storytelling — sharing and amplifying Marion’s narrative

  2. Trails, Tales & Treasures — themed monthly “trails” that guide you to local points of interest

  3. Program integration through grant funding — supporting local organizations that are building America 250 programming

  4. Red, White & YOU — a four-day capstone weekend in July

Trails, Tales & Treasures

The easiest way for most people to participate is the Thematic Trails Experience: 12 distinct monthly trails (one for each month of 2026), offered through both printed guides and a mobile-friendly app available via Apple and Google Play. The guides will also be available at the Visitor Center at 198 W. Center St. downtown.

These trails aren’t strict routes. Think of them as curated clusters — groups of related places you can visit in any order. Do one stop after work. Knock out a few on a Saturday. Or go full completionist and clear the whole list like it’s a side quest with better snacks.

Examples of trail themes shared by organizers include:

  • Marion’s Firsts & Originals (local pioneers, “firsts,” and originals)

  • Marion Works: Innovation & Industry (active sites tied to manufacturing and workforce innovation)

  • Marion Outdoors (parks, greenspaces, and natural resources across the county)

Grant-funded programs are already in motionAmerica 250 Marion isn’t only a marketing banner — it’s also putting fuel in the tank. A one-time $50,000 America 250 grant program has already awarded funding to local organizations creating 2026 programs and events.

A few of the funded projects include:

  • Downtown Marion, Inc.’s “Taste of Time Festival,”

  • Harding Presidential Sites’ “Marion’s Homecoming Picnic"

  • Marion Public Library history initiative

  • Palace Cultural Arts Association youth summer theatre camp, and more county-wide programs meant to bring the celebration to life.

The kickoff (and the big July finish)

The public kickoff happens with a ribbon cutting at Heritage Hall (169 E. Church St.). Organizers are gathering on the north-facing steps for a ceremonial ribbon cutting and commemorative photo, followed by proclamations/remarks and light refreshments inside.

The year builds toward the capstone:

Red, White & YOU Weekend, July 16–19, 2026 — positioned as a four-day community celebration anchored by food, music, and Marion County pride.

How to participate (no committee membership required)If you want in, you don’t have to “join” anything. Start simple:

  • Download the Trails, Tales & Treasures app (or grab a printed guide) and do one trail stop this month

  • Watch the calendar for partner events tied to America 250 Marion

  • Show up to the kickoff, take the photo, and be part of the first page of the year

  • If you’re the volunteering type, the committees are actively welcoming more community involvement and ideas

America 250 Marion is basically a permission slip: to re-notice the place you live, learn the stories you’ve driven past for years, and remember that “history” isn’t just something that happened somewhere else.
